The infamous City Power scam seems to be rearing its ugly head again in the Roodepoort area.

Absolut Security apprehended bogus ‘personnel’ in Helderkruin View on Wednesday, 22 May for attempting to take some residents for a ride.

According to the security company, the men pretended to be City Power workers and tried to scam residents of Basalt Road based on their ‘outstanding’ electricity bills.

The company said the ‘City Power workers’ were at their client’s home on 21 May. They cut off the electricity and told him his account was in arrears.

They asked him to pay the outstanding money into an account (obviously theirs) but he decided to pay it into the account allocated to his property. He subsequently called City Power in Braamfontein and asked them to reconnect his electricity, but when he produced his receipt, the legitimate officials at City Power said the documents were fake and that he did not owe the entity anything, a Facebook post by Absolut Security read.

The ‘City Power workers’ phoned on 22 May and said that they would reconnect him, but that he needed to pay them R5 000 in cash. He then approached Absolut Security to assist him when the ‘workers’ arrived at his house, which led to their arrest, according to the post.

The company indicated that City Power and the police have taken the case further.
