Soccer unites African brothers on Workers’ Day

Teams that included numerous foreign nationals locked horns with the aim of diminishing the stereotypes about foreign nationals and taking a stand against xenophobia

 

While most professionals enjoyed Worker’s Day (1 May) away from the workplace, footballers and residents of Zandspruit spent the day uniting under the beautiful game of football.

Teams made up of foreign nations locked horns during a tournament at Video Centre Stadium in Muldersdrift that was aimed at diminishing the stereotype about foreign national as well as stand against xenophobia.

The teams included Video Really Legends (the host of the tournament), Oliven Really Legends, Black Stars Despo, Really Brothers and Ethiopian FC. The clubs had mixes of different African brothers from locals, Zimbabweans and Ethiopians.

One of the organisers, Fanie Dlamini said, “The late Tatu Nelson Mandela once said sports can reunite everyone. So the tournament was all about knowing each other build relationships and work together as Africans,” he explained.

After several group matches, Video Real Masters emerged victorious and lifted the trophy and achieved gold medals while runner-ups, Real Brothers, went home with silver medals.
