Allen Glen rugby stars shine through the clouds for Lions at St John’s Easter Festival
Tinashe and Sino have been making big strides on the rugby field since their U/15 year.
Prodigiously talented Allen Glen High School rugby players, Tinashe Gowere and Sino Tshontyi, shone once again when they represented the U/19 Golden Lions President’s Team at the St John’s College Easter Rugby Festival.
Tinashe and Sino have been an integral part of their teams at Allen Glen since their U/15 year, when both were selected for the Golden Lions Iqalwe U/15 team. The two were then picked together once again for the U/16 Golden Lions President’s Team the following year, narrowly missing out on spots in the Lions’ U/16 Grant Khomo Week side.
They continued to play stellar rugby in their U/17 year, which led to Sino being selected for the U/19 President’s Team, while Tinashe was chosen for the Lions Sevens team that travelled to the Seychelles. The following year (2018), when both players were U/18, Sino was again selected for the U/19 President’s Team, with Tinashe joining him in donning the jersey this time around. It was also last year that the pair were selected for the Golden Lions Country Districts team that took part in the U/18 Academy Week, the ‘little brother’ of the Coca-Cola Craven Week.
The pair remain inseparable, as this year they were selected for the U/19 President’s Team, the third successive year for Sino, and second successive year for Tinashe, with the team taking to the field at the 24th St John’s College Easter Rugby Festival from 18–22 April. Due to the terrible weather that struck during the Easter weekend, the Lions side was only able to play two of its scheduled games, of which they won one and lost one.
The first day was rough for the President’s Team, as they lost 66–7 to Paarl Boys’ High. Their second game saw them pitted against St David’s Marist Inanda, where they earned a much better result by beating the Sandton-based school 19–12. Tinashe and Sino even managed to get on the scoresheet in the second game, with a try (the one that won them the game) that was named the Best Try of Day 2 of the festival by School Sport Live.
