Hijackings continue to plague Ruimsig and surrounds

The three hijackings took place in the space of 11 days.

A series of hijackings has plagued Ruimsig and the surrounding areas in the last couple of weeks, with one taking place on Friday, 15 March, and two more on Tuesday, 26 March, according to Drift Reaction.

According to a Facebook post by Drift Reaction, the two hijackings on Tuesday took place at about 9pm at two separate petrol stations. “The first was at a petrol station opposite Ruimsig Country Estate and the second occurred a few minutes later at the newly built petrol station opposite the Mall [Cradlestone Mall],” the post read. It also stated that the first vehicle was recovered soon afterwards.

The second hijacking was the second at the petrol station in a matter of 11 days as on 15 March another individual had his car stolen shortly after stopping for food. According to the Facebook post, “The client and his wife stopped at the kiosk after they bought take-aways from an outlet at the back of the premises”.

It was while the man was waiting for his wife to return that a suspect approached from behind and “cocked a firearm close to his head and pushed it behind his ear”. The suspects demanded the car’s keys, and after initially struggling to find them, the victim instructed them that they were under items in the car’s console.

Once the suspects found the keys, they forced the victim out of his vehicle and began searching him before proceeding to assault him. “They forced him to crawl under a vehicle parked next to his,” the post stated. “The two got into his vehicle and left, taking cellphones, food and his wallet.”

The post concluded by stating that “The suspects arrived in a white Mercedes Benz and were so brazen that they ‘stole’ a parking spot from another patron, in order to park close to our client. The remaining suspects in the Mercedes sped off behind the hijacked vehicle. The tracking device was activated and the last update was that the vehicle was in Princess, Roodepoort.”
