Road rules must be obeyed by both motorists and pedestrians

Siyazifukula Learner Transport Association (SLTA) urges pedestrians and motorists to obey the rules of the road, especially when it comes to pedestrian crossings.
At a recent meeting held by SLTA, the focus was the importance of drivers stopping when a pedestrian is crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing. As much as drivers should stop for the pedestrians, it is also important for pedestrians to cross directly on the blocks; not before them, and not after.
“As a Learner Transport Association, we view this problem in a serious light. We are concerned about the well-being and safety of the community,” said the chairperson, Bheki Ziqubu.
The most common unsafe behaviours found at pedestrian crossings are:
• Motorists speeding over the pedestrian crossing and ignoring the scholar patrollers.
• Failure to adhere to the law, and no regard for road traffic regulations.
“Too many lives have been lost as a result of people taking unnecessary risks, so we wish to encourage all motorists to abide by the rules of the road. Slow down at pedestrian crossings, and stop when a scholar patroller indicates to you to do so,” Bheki said.
SLTA is a transport association based on the West Rand that deals with transporting learners to and from school. For more information, contact their office on 011 766 2918.
