Makatsa and Thulane continue to enjoy ‘holiday’
We are still at the time of year when the eagles can enjoy some time off.
The Black Eagles in the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden have been enjoying some well-earned time off from being parents, and have a little longer to do so.
Makatsa and Thulane said goodbye to their latest offspring – Ithemba – only three months ago, and have been enjoying a well-deserved rest ever since, relishing the opportunities to fly around as they please. According to Johann van den Berg, Black Eagle Project Roodekrans (BEPR) photographer and monitor, the BEPR has begun monitoring the eagles as the breeding season is only a month or two away.

“The eagles are still doing lazy fly-arounds and disappear for hours on end,” Johann said. “We certainly grant them their last days of freedom, because we know that soon they will jump to work.” The work that Johann is referring to is set to keep them busy for the rest of the year once they get under way.
“For the next nine months, they will be refurbishing the old nest or building a new one, incubating eggs, feeding a chick, and finally preparing a juvenile eagle to face the perils of a new life,” he explained.
“Enjoy the last few days of your holiday, Thulane and Makatsa.”
