JMPD – we can’t be everywhere

'JMPD will monitor the road when the opportunity arises'.

The issue of manpower continues to be a major factor that affects Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) policing in many parts of Roodepoort.

The lawlessness among motorists continue to be rife on most roads and sadly JMPD can do little to monitor some routes due to other commitments.

The recurring truck accidents downhill along William Nicol Road in Florida Park have highlighted a brewing issue in the area, which led nearby businesses to appeal to law enforcement to stop heavy load vehicles exceeding five tons from using the road, or at least install speed-calming measures such as speed humps to slow down the traffic.

The latest accident – the previous one was less that three weeks before – was on Tuesday 5 March when a truck’s brakes apparently failed, resulting in it overturning close to Life Flora Clinic.

Although nobody was injured, concerned bystanders said they fear the worst if law enforcement does not act swiftly to find a solution to the problem.

JMPD Region C Superintendent Wandile Mrubata said officers do monitor the area; however, it cannot be done around the clock. “The problem is we cannot be in that area 24/ 7 because currently, [lack of] manpower is killing us. There are road signs on William Nicol Road prohibiting trucks exceeding five tons from using the road, just like on Doreen Road,” he explained.

He added that JMPD will monitor the road when the opportunity arises.
