Taking reading to next level
Silverstar staff has selected different books to read to children from their library
Volunteers from among Silverstar’s staff gathered at the Munsieville Primary School to read to the Grade RRs, Rs and 1s on 1 February.
This was to celebrate World Read Aloud Day, which is honoured in 100 countries, encouraging people to read and share stories with children and to advocate for literacy as a human right.
The staff members selected different books from their library to read to the children.
Mampho Thloloe, Payroll Clerk, read a story to the Grade R class. “Always give children the attention they need. This story reminded me of my childhood, when my grandmother was more concerned with whether we ate than with our dirty laundry,” said Mampho.
Another staff member, Hazel Stilianou, shared the story called Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr Seuss, which teaches children not to be afraid. Hazel said it was a great privilege to share the joy of reading with the kids, as reading opens up a world of imagination.
The Communications Manager at Silverstar, Bomi Bukali, also choose a Dr Suess book. Bomi said, “This reminded me of my childhood and how my dad was instrumental in my love of reading! It was such fun interacting with the little ones and being surrounded by their great energy.”
Adele Wilson, Silverstar Manager, said, “Reading aloud is one of the most important things a parent and caregiver can do with children. It builds a strong language foundation, it introduces vocabulary, and can help to develop empathy, curiosity and critical thinking. Read Aloud Day gave us the opportunity to share this privilege with children at Munsieville Primary, while also mobilising our staff to volunteer and get involved.”
