The Roodepoort Northsider recently had a chat with the learners at Oak Hill Academy in Radiokop, to teach them a bit about the ins and outs of journalism. Oak Hill contacted the Northsider, asking us to pay the school a visit and chat to its Grades 4 to 6 learners about journalism, what the field comprises, and all sorts of things about what we do.
We arrived at the school at 9am, and were welcomed by a joyous group of learners who seemed eager to learn whatever they could about the work we do.

The presentation included quite a bit of information on how we go about putting our newspapers together; from writing the articles to the photography, and even the layout of the pages. We also carried out a fun activity with the learners where one of them had the chance to become a reporter by listening to three distorted versions of one story to show just how three people can tell three different stories.
We even did a Facebook live video with the learners to help showcase just how important social media is in journalism, but not before we also discussed the various forms of digital media that the field manifests itself in.

At the end of the presentation, a couple of the learners said that they would like to become journalists, providing an awesome end to a fun day at Oak Hill.
