Charterhouse stars receive professional netball and soccer coaching

The clinic gave the soccer and netball players the chance to benefit from some of the brilliant minds of both sports.

Charterhouse’s netball and soccer stars had the honour of receiving coaching from former soccer players and current netball players at a clinic held on 6 and 7 February.

The clinic was organised by the school to try and provide its upcoming netball and soccer players with next-level coaching from former soccer players Matthew Booth and Joseph ‘Duku Duku’ Makhanya, and veteran netball player, Erin Burger. The weather was rather dismal at times during the course of the two-day training, but that didn’t stop the Happy Chaps from ensuring they learnt the most they could from the brilliant minds that were on hand to coach them.

Matthew Booth – who made 448 senior career club appearances, as well as 28 for Bafana Bafana – had the services of Duku Duku, who played 140 games for Orlando Pirates, as well as three other coaches on hand to try and take the children’s game to the next level. Each time the rain started pouring, the soccer players would take shelter until it passed, but shortly thereafter found themselves sprinting back onto the field to get going again.

The netball girls had the honour of learning from the expertise of Erin Burger, who was the first South African netball player to notch up 100 caps for the Proteas, South Africa’s netball team. While netball couldn’t be played even after the rain as wet courts are far too dangerous, Erin and her group of Happy Chaps continued their work in the school hall.
