Allen Glen High School Class of 2018 made their way back to their school on the morning of 4 January to collect their results.
The Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, released the National Senior Certificate results for 2018 on Thursday, 3 January, announcing a much-improved pass rate of 78,2 per cent nationally. She also detailed the provincial pass rate.
Gauteng was named the top province achieving a staggering 87,9 per cent pass. The Johannesburg West District of which Allen Glen High School is a part was placed fifth nationally. This was seemingly enough to give the former learners an indication of how well they had done and to boost their confidence as they walked towards the results venue.
Some learners accompanied by their parents arrived as early as 8am, while others came alone and met their pals before parting ways.
The Northsider spoke to a number of former matriculants about their future endeavours.
Christian Anderson told the journalist that after 12 years of school, he opted to work this year. He said he wanted to use the period to decide what he really wanted to study.
Tebello Koloko, who has a keen interest in the hotel industry, preferred to enrol in a traineeship with Protea Hotels instead of furthering her studies at a university, although a number had accepted her. “The traineeship programme with Protea Hotels will allow me to get an overview of the hotel industry while I study and work at the same time,” said the bachelor’s degree pass achiever.
The former head boy of the school, Cameron Mckrill shed light on the options and opportunities available to him. “It’s a relief that everything I’ve worked for was finally achieved, and being accepted into Wits to study either Bachelor’s of Arts or Arts with Law,” he said.
The star rugby player also hinted about his rugby coaching career opportunity at a private school.
His proud father, Warren Mckrill and chairperson of the School Governing Body (SGB) expressed his pride. “We are certainly very proud of Cameron. We as parents have been very supportive and will continue to be,” he said.
The principal of the school, Jane Kruger congratulated the learners. “Congratulation to everybody who worked hard and achieved the results they were hoping for. I hope they all go to varsity and study,” she said.
Although the school had not analysed its pass rate yet, the principal concluded by urging those who did not do well or pass at all to explore avenues of improving their results and to enable them to reach for their dreams.
