ProTouch reaps rewards for stellar 2018 season

Four ProTouch cyclists finished at the top of their respective categories in the 2018 Road Cycling Series.

ProTouch Cycling was rewarded for its cyclists’ achievements in the Support SA Talent Road Cycling Series at the inaugural, Breakfast of Champions on Wednesday, 21 November.

The Road Cycling Series – aimed at recognising South Africa’s top locally-competing road cycling athletes and teams – kicked off in January 2018 and contained 18 one-day Classic events, five Multi-stage Tours and the 2018 South African National Champs Road Race and Individual Time Trial.

Leveraging the existing South African road racing calendar, the Road Cycling Series ranks the top road cycling teams and athletes, based on performance throughout the racing season. Covering over 4 600km of racing and more than 54 000m of vertical elevation, the Road Cycling Series has been tracking more than 500 licensed riders and over 50 teams in the Ladies and Men’s Junior, U/23 and Elite Categories.

ProTouch dominated in the Overall Series category as they won both the Junior Men’s (Tiano Da Silva) and Elite Men’s category (Jaydé Julius). Tiano also finished off in second place in the Best Junior Tour Rider category, behind teammate Rickardo Broxham. Gustav Basson rounded off the final win for ProTouch, with the Best Tour Rider in the Elite Men’s category, with teammate Jaydé in 3rd Place.

During an on-stage interview, ProTouch’s Myles van Musschenbroek – Lead Brand Ambassador of the Support SA Talent Project – advised that the Road Cycling Series is part of the broader Support SA Talent Project. “Our purpose is to create a sustainable, transparent and athlete-centric road cycling ecosystem – enabling athletes to perform at international levels,” he said. “We have engineered a range of innovative funding mechanisms that we believe will have an impact on South African road cyclists and their teams.”
