Widespread clean-ups in parts of Roodepoort

The residents teamed up in their respective areas to clean-up their surrounds, which had become an eyesore.

Residents in the Honeydew, Ruimsig and Weltevreden Park suburbs did their bit to keep the environment litter free on Saturday, 17 November.

The residents teamed up in their respective areas to clean up their surrounds, which had become an eyesore.

In Ruimsig, ward 97 PR councillor, Ralf Bittkau, led a clean-up which saw the removal of litter around the Ruimsig dam.

“The dam is appreciated by everyone living in the area but had become choked with litter attributed predominantly to an informal settlement close by. Despite scorching temperatures, the project was a great success with a lot of community support. We even discovered a gill net in the water with fish trapped in it,” said Ralf as he reflected on the project.

He added that the net was destroyed and the fish were released. “Gill nets are considered inhumane and are illegal,” Ralf criticised, adding that he will be organising more community clean-ups at the dam regularly. He also urged those interested in joining the next clean-ups to contact him on 084 572 4002.

The community of Weltevreden Park, which forms part of the Panorama Residents Association, removed illegal signage and advertising on many roads in the area. This was done with the assistance of two security companies, namely Beagle Watch and BCI Security.

The members of the RA went all the way to Hendrik Potgieter Road to remove illegal signs strapped onto traffic lights.

These projects were part of the City’s A Re Sebetseng clean-up campaign which was started by the City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba when he took office.
