Home gardens competed for the supreme prize
Owners of the units entered their gardens in the first-ever Ruimsig Retirement Village Garden Competition, a competition which sought to recognise the finest garden for the year.
One thing that sets Ruimsig Retirement Village apart when you enter the premises is the pride and effort put into the villagers’ gardens.
The gardens and some decorated colourful flower beds surrounding each unit – making each home a unique refreshing sight – were recently put to the test.
Owners of the units entered their gardens in the first-ever Ruimsig Retirement Village Garden Competition, a competition which sought to recognise the finest garden for the year.

Rennell Liebenberg, the management associate, shed light on the concept. “There are 100 units in the village and we felt that the management association should recognise all the effort that the residents put into their gardens. So we took the decision to have this garden competition in order to acknowledge them by giving them a prize,” she said.
In an effort to ensure that the judging process was fair, Rennell explained that independent garden experts were used in the judging process. “On Wednesday, 14 November, the judges came through to judge the gardens,” she said.

She added that the gardens were divided into small, medium and large garden categories and the judges scored each household based the following; overall visual impression, garden maintenance, product and plants selected to convey design, hard landscaping, and quality of installation and construction, just to mention a few.
Winners were announced during the weekend’s prize-giving event on Saturday, 17 November, in the village’s hall.
The first prizes in all three categories went to the following residents:
For small garden: Rentia and Colin Hey; medium garden Lenie and Jan Pretorius and the large garden and overall winners were Annette and Peter Capper.
