Fireworks allowed on only two days during festive season

According to Mrubata, residents who light fireworks on any of the days not specified by the City should be reported.

Fireworks as entertainment will only be tolerated for two days prior to the new year. The warning was issued by Johannesburg Metro Police Department Superintendent Wandile Mrubata.

According to Mrubata, residents who light fireworks on any of the days not specified by the City, ” … should be reported to JMPD while in the act,” he urged the residents.

Among the many reasons for the restrictions on fireworks are that they cause distress to animals, danger to children and unacceptably high noise levels.

Mrubata also encouraged residents to report those selling fireworks without permits. “To sell fireworks you need to approach the Environmental Health Department, EMS and JMPD, who will inspect the premises where the fireworks are to sold, and issue a licence if approved,” he explained, adding that the licence is renewable every year.

Forms for applying to sell fireworks are obtainable at JMPD and EMS offices.
