Charterhouse chess stars making all the right moves
A handful of Charterhouse's best chess players will be taking part in a national competition in December this year.
Five of Charterhouse Preparatory School’s most talented chess players are gearing up to represent the Johannesburg Metro Chess team at the South African Junior Chess Championship (SAJCC).
South Africa’s premier junior chess event of the year, the SAJCC, will take place in Ekurhuleni between 15 and 24 December and will crown the strongest province through a competition which will see more than 2 500 chess players take part. The chess prodigies from Charterhouse are Tawana Chinoruma (10), Iliana van der Sandt (7), Zion Smith (7), Ofentse Peete (7) and Kupa Chinoruma (6).
They will compete alongside other rising stars from Johannesburg in the U/8, U/10, and U/12 age groups against South Africa’s top chess players, with the hope of snatching the national gold and individual board prizes.
“Despite chess being a predominantly individual game, team events bring about its characteristic bonding power that makes it one of the most popular games played worldwide,” said their coach, Alessandro Parodi. Hence, it is no surprise that Tawana, Iliana, Zion, Ofentse, and Kupa’s successes have roots in the sense of family and togetherness taught by Alessandro.
“The five talented children are but the tip of the iceberg of a much broader chess movement which involves most of the school’s pupils,” continued Alessandro. Charterhouse’s chess team meets four times a week to train with passionate teachers and professional coaches from the Randburg Chess Academy in preparation for what lies ahead in December.
