Eagle Canyon set alight at inaugural Girl on Fire event

The inaugural Girl on Fire event was hosted by Native Child at Eagle Canyon Golf Estate on Saturday, 29 September.

NativeChild, a Roodepoort-based natural hair and body care brand hosted its first annual Girl on Fire event at the Eagle Canyon Golf Estate on Saturday, 29 September.

The star-studded women’s event brought together bright minds who gave talks that are idea-focused, and on a wide range of subjects, to foster learning, inspiration, wonder. “I am all about gaining knowledge and sharing knowledge.

So this, for me, was to distribute and localise information through women of great stature to women who aspire to be great,” said Sonto Pooe, Founder of NativeChild and Girl On Fire.

South African pop culture stars such as Boity Thulo, Mpoomy Ledwaba, Mapaseka Koetle-Nyokong, ThickLeeyonce, Dr Nandipha Sekeleni, Nicolette Mashile, Ancillar Mangena and Mogau Seshoene, founder of The Lazy Makoti spoke in various panel discussions throughout the day.

“I truly believe that iron sharpens iron, and a ‘Queendom’ only exists when queens straighten each other’s crowns, and that is exactly what the event is about,” said television presenter Candice Modiselle. The Girl on Fire event focused on distribution of knowledge regarding business, health and well-being, self-motivation, extrinsic appeal versus inner beauty and the fusion of both, as well as fashion.

“As a businesswoman you don’t have to be busy all the time, learn to delegate and give yourself a time out. Time is more valuable than money. Make a change where you are,” said Mpoomy Ledwaba speaking during the Millennials Panel discussion.

ThickLeeyonce, a strong advocate for changing the mentalities regarding the ‘ideal female body’ in mainstream media said women need to accept themselves in whatever shape or colour. “You have to accept yourself as you are and take the power back by loving yourself.”

Also speaking during the Millennials Panel discussion, actress and business owner Mapaseka Koetle-Nyokong said that you must “Always be honest with yourself. Ask for help where you need to. Better yourself on a daily and ensure to always ensure to share knowledge and information.” She also furthered Mpoomy Ledwaba’s belief in making a change where you are, saying that “you need to slay in your lane. If you’re in Alex, slay in Alex. If you’re in Vereeniging, slay in Vereeniging”.

Guests went home with goodie bags and also got to enjoy a fashion show by Haute Afrika, an African print fashion brand.
