We’re into the last week of the Name the Chick competition

We are heading into the final stages of the Name the Chick competition, which will be ending this Friday, 14 September.

Monday, 10 September marked the beginning of the end of the Name the Chick competition as we entered the final week of the competition.

For the past month (since 17 August) we, the Roodepoort Northsider, and the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans (BEPR) have been giving the public the opportunity to suggest a name for the newest addition to the Black Eagle family. Makatsa and Thulane have been taking care of their eagle chick – now a juvenile – since it hatched on 16 June this year, and we keep getting closer to the deadline for its fledging.

At the time of its hatching, the BEPR predicted the juvenile would flee the nest somewhere around 16 September, as it’s the 30-day mark that usually signifies the end of its time in the nest. It’s estimated that the wingspan of a Verreaux’s Eagle hatchling increases at a rate of 2cm a day during its time in the nest, which should place its wingspan now somewhere around 1,7m, with approximately five days to go in the nest.

All it takes to enter is two simple steps:

Step 1: Enter your details and answers on the form at the end of the article.

Step 2: ‘Like’ the Roodepoort Northsider’s Facebook page, share the article, and tag four friends in the comments section to see who can come up with the best name.
