A trio from Monash South Africa, Lulama Maqubela, Muhammad Raafsid and Lesego Kobuwe, have made the cut as three of the 35 university graduates and postgraduates selected out of hundreds of hopefuls to attend the first Global Entrepreneurship Summer School (GESS) to be held in the country.
The GESS will be held in Cape Town from 9 to 15 September for the first time, courtesy of South African social impact enterprise, LifeCo UnLtd SA, in partnership with the Social Entrepreneurship Akademie.GESS is organised in conjunction with six leading university-based entrepreneurship centres in Munich, Shanghai, Mexico City and Cape Town. The initiative is founded on the belief in the power of entrepreneurial thinking for a better and sustainable future.

With a United Nations population estimate of 9,6 billion by 2050 and the equivalent of three planets of natural resources needed to support the world’s current lifestyle, the rapid development of sustainable, innovative business solutions to solve the global consumption crisis has become urgent. Thirty-five select young university post and undergraduates are set to meet in Cape Town over seven days to focus on this challenge.
“The quality of submissions from the university applicants was very encouraging, with irresponsible use of natural resources high on the list of targeted problems for which the GESS participants will seek to find innovative and entrepreneurial solutions for this year’s global challenge of consumption,” said LifeCo’s Chief Development Officer, Carmen Di Rito, reflecting on the application forms and motivational letters they received from the successful candidates.
