Relief efforts were started by individuals and organisations to assist the exhausted firemen who were hard at work. Community members were requested donate water, energy drinks, crisps and chocolate bars to boost their flagging energy levels, and according to Gary Jordaan from BCI Security, the communities paid heed.

One of the drop-off locations, Florida Fire Station, was packed with donated items that kept pouring in from various entities and individuals.
Ward 71 councillor, Rene Benjamin, who is pleased with donations, recounted what the firefighters were experiencing. “We went through last night [5 September] to drop off some refreshments for the Joburg group. When we arrived at the scene, besides the road closures and the burning building, the firefighters were all lined up against a wall, with some lying on the pavements in a state of exhaustion, traumatised by the loss of three of their own. They were all downhearted and you could see it on their faces. Their morale was really low,” she said. Rene hailed the firefighters as heroes for sticking it out until the very last puff of smoke was destroyed.

She also praised the different organisations and individuals who united to support the cause. “We had communities, companies, individuals, police and schools all coming to donate items,” said Rene, who appealed to the communities to keep donating as the fires, particularly in Joburg, could take up to three days to extinguish. “I’m grateful to everyone who donated, but would like to keep it going because they’re going to need refreshments until Sunday,” she appealed.

Ward 85 councillor, Sonia Meyer, also expressed her gratitude to the residents in her ward for the immense help. “I want to thank everyone for their generous donations, especially the residents of my ward and the Lions Club Wilro Park,” she said. She concluded by expressing her condolences to the families of the firefighters who lost their lives.
To donate the direly needed items, visit the Florida Fire Station, located on the corner of Golf Club Terrace and Ontdekkers Road.
