Rabada edges Ngidi, Dyantyi as sport personalities grace Gauteng Sport Awards
Gauteng's finest athletes and sport personalities were honoured at the 2018 Gauteng Sports Awards on Sunday, 2 September 2018.
A glamorous affair, the 2018 Gauteng Sport Awards saw hundreds of Gauteng’s finest athletes, sports fans and personalities grace the black carpet at Silverstar Casino on Sunday, 2 September.
The annual awards ceremony sets out to honour the achievements of the province’s finest athletes, teams, organisers, and even media personalities.
Beginning at 6pm, the evening got under way with a welcome from the team of emcees who would conduct the evening’s proceedings – Julia Stuart, Maps Maponyane, and Motshidisi Mohono. The first award of the evening was the Administrator of the Year award, which went to Siyabonga Ndlovu.
In between the rewarding of the athletes, coaches, and personalities for their efforts were phenomenal performances from some of South Africa’s top performers such as Nadia Nakai, Matthew Mole, and many more. As the night went on, a total of 12 awards were handed out, not including the three Lifetime Achievement Awards awarded by the Gauteng Member of the Executive Committee (MEC) for Sport, Faith Mazibuko.
The MEC rewarded the likes of Professor Yoga Coopoo, Norman Hlabane, and ‘Grannie’ Josina Tellie for their incredible contributions to sport in Gauteng during their years of service. As the evening began drawing to a close, it was time for the three most-anticipated awards of the evening to be handed out.
First was the Sportsman of the Year, to go to either Kagiso Rabada, Aphiwe Dyantyi, Lungi Ngidi, or Martin Erasmus. Kagiso Rabada took home this honour as his seventh award of the year, after receiving a record six awards at this year’s Cricket South Africa awards.
Next was the Sportswoman of the Year, which was to go to either Refiloe Jane, Kirsten McCann, or Danelle Wentzel. The award went to Refiloe Jane, who has done phenomenal work on the women’s football front in the past year.
The final award of the evening was the Sports Personality of the Year, to be handed to either Kgothatso Montjane, Kagiso Rabada, William Mokgopo, or Refiloe Jane. Wheelchair tennis player Kgothatso Montjane was honoured with this award, with Anthony Moruthane receiving the award on her behalf.
The evening ended with one final performance, as the team of emcees bade one final farewell to close off a successful evening.

- Most Promising Athlete/Player of the Year: Wandisile Simelane
- School Sport Athlete of the Year: Alwande Skhosana
- Most Promising Team of the Year: Troyeville Primary School U/13 Boys Volleyball Team
- Sport Team of the Year with a Disability: Gauteng Wheelchair Basketball Senior Men’s Team
- Sport Team of the Year: Gauteng Jaguars Netball
- Coach of the Year: Nico Coetzee, Boksburg Amateur Wrestling Club
- Community Sport and Recreation Programme of the Year: Mpho Makhoba
- Community Media of the Year: Soweto TV
- Sport Journalist of the Year: Charles Baloyi, Media24
- Sportsman of the Year with a Disability: Jacque Joubert
- Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability: Khethiwe Zulu
- Sport Programme of the Year: Dlala Mzansi, Soweto TV
- Lifetime Achievement Awards: Professor Yoga Coopoo, Norman Hlabane, and ‘Grannie’ Josina Tellie
- Sport Fan of the Year: Mamello Constance Makha
- Sportsman of the Year: Kagiso Rabada
- Sportswoman of the Year: Refiloe Jane
- Sport Personality of the Year: Kgothatso Montjane
