Have you entered the Name the Chick competition yet?

If you haven't entered the Name the Chick competition, you still have plenty of time to enter.

The Name the Chick competition has been running for a week-and-a-half, and whether you’ve joined the other 160+ entrants thus far or not, you still have 17 days to enter.

The competition was launched on Thursday, 16 August, in association with the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans as a means of naming the newest addition to the Black Eagle family. The egg hatched on 16 June, and now at 72 days old, the eaglet still needs a name.

Unfortunately, we don’t know whether the eaglet is male or female yet, as it’s a tricky process to determine which gender it is. There are only two ways to determine that at the moment, and only one of them is possible.

One way is to draw blood from the eaglet’s talons and test to see if it’s male or female. At this point, that’s not a possibility.

The other way to determine its gender, is to wait until it’s time for the eaglet to fly the nest. At this point, you’ll be able to tell if it’s male or female based on how long the eaglet stays in the nest.

If it stays longer, it’s a female, as females grow larger than the males. But, in the meantime, all we can do is suggest a name or two for the eaglet by entering the Name the Chick competition.

The competition is running until 14 September, and gives you the chance to win a R500 Spar voucher, a R200 voucher at the Eagle’s Fare Restaurant in the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, as well as a two-night midweek stay for two people at one of the Guvon Hotel and Spa establishments (Fairway).

Please note that if you work for or are affiliated to the South African National Biodiversity Institute, the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans, Proteadal Conservation Association, Wild Orchids of Southern Africa Association, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, or the Caxton and CTP Group Limited, you are not permitted to enter the competition.

The competition will run until 14 September.
