Golden Drifters FC ready for SAB league

Golden Drifter Football Club unveiled its new home and away kits for the challenging journey they are about to embark on.

It is now up to the players to live up to their team’s vision and flourish as a whole and individually in the field as they begin a new chapter in the SAB league.

At the event held at Monash South Africa on 2 August, the chuffed players were introduced to their technical team and encouraged by investors and football veteran Helman Mkhele, the former Orlando Pirates player, who spoke about his journey as a young footballer and the importance of keeping focus as a player.

Helman reflected on how today’s aspiring footballers were privileged to have so many academic teams in their midst, whereas in his time there was no such thing. “Back in the days we had to come from different provinces and converge at Orlando Stadium where more than 5 000 people attended the football trials and only three would be selected from the lot,” he said.

He congratulated the boys on their new league journey and reminded them to remain humble when success comes. “I know some of you will be successful. Today’s football requires discipline and football intelligence.

So I encourage you to go and research to become better players and also pursue education just in case you get injured,” he explained.

Club investor Rivo Mhlari, CEO of Rikatec, who was a guest speaker, along with his business partner, Tiyani Rikhotso, pledged their support to the club and urged the boys to take their careers seriously. “We need to change the mentality that football is a recreational activity. You need to know that when you are on the football field you’re doing a job,” he said, also reminded them to respect themselves and treat football as a career.

Golden Drifters was founded by Proud Shoko at the age of 16, while attending high school.

“The journey was emotional at the beginning. Seven years ago I had a dream to start the club. It was a very rough and difficult journey – not even my parents believed in this dream,” said an emotional Proud.

At the end of the event, the players were given their jerseys and celebrations erupted as they queued for a photo shoot.
