First marimba competition a joy for Charterhouse
The experience was an absolute joy for the marimba group from Charterhouse.
Charterhouse School’s marimba group took part in their first, and the overall seventh, Education Africa International Marimba and Steelpan Festival, held at St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls in Boksburg on Saturday, 28 June.
The Education Africa competition is the largest of its kind in the world, with over 2 000 participants showing their stuff in over 250 different performances. The day in Boksburg was not all about the competition however, as several workshops were held throughout the day to help the children taking part develop their skills.
To the Charterhouse group, the trip was more about the experience of being part of such an event, and garnering knowledge from the other marimba groups, than about winning. By the end of the fierce competition, they knew they hadn’t made it into the top three, and unfortunately they’re unaware of their placing as only the top three positions were announced.
“Nevertheless, great fun was had by all who attended, and it was a great experience for everybody,” said Charterhouse’s Carmel McLaren.
