Planned road closures for Women’s Race released

Several roads in Newtown, Braamfontein and Burgersdorp will be closed off due to the Totalsports Women's Race this year.

The streets of Burgersdorp, Newtown and Braamfontein will be a hub of excitement on National Women’s Day (Thursday, 9 August) this year, when thousands of runners and walkers dressed in pink take on the Totalsports Women’s Race.

Due to the nature of the race, several roads will be closed as the runners #RunUnited in support of PinkDrive.

“The Johannesburg route is fairly fast and flat with a really nice challenge between the 5km and 7km marks,” said Agne du Plessis, Stillwater Sports’ General Manager of Road Running and Athletics. “Iconic landmarks to look out for on the route will include the Oriental Plaza, the Constitutional Court of South Africa, the Johannesburg Theatre, and the Nelson Mandela Bridge, to mention but a few.”

Agne also mentioned that both the 5km and 10km races will start and finish at the same points, despite the large difference in distance. While some of the roads will only be rolling closures, others will be closed off between 5am and 1pm.

Event organisers urge road users to seek alternative routes on the day, as the closures could have a dramatic effect on traffic.

Portions of the following roads in Burgersdorp, Newtown and Braamfontein will be affected by road closures on the day: Henry Nxumalo Street, Jeppe Street, Main Street, Noria Mabasa Street, Dolly Rathebe Road, Church Street, Queens Road, Clifton Street, Bartlett Road, Krause Street, 8th Street, Enoch Sontonga Avenue, Jorissen Street, Bertha Street, Ameshoff Street, and Melle Street.
