Rugby trio make up Allen Glen contingent at U/18 Academy Week

Three players from Allen Glen are making the school proud at the U/18 Academy Week at Paarl Boys’ High School in Paarl this week.

Three rugby players from Allen Glen High School are making the school proud at the 2018 U/18 Academy Week in Paarl, Western Cape, this week.

Sino Tshontyi, Brian Mzamba and Tinashe Gowere were selected for the Golden Lions Country Districts after a rigorous trial and selection process that saw them qualify to play in the U/18 Academy Week.

The Academy Week provides a platform for young rugby stars around the country to showcase their talents on a provincial stage, and is the ‘little brother’ of the renowned Coca-Cola Craven Week. It often happens, and unfairly so, that people perceive the Academy Week to be of less importance, as they think the standard of rugby played is inferior to that at the Craven Week. However, the level of rugby showcased by the players who play at the Academy Week is still phenomenal, and the matches can often be more tense and nail-biting than those in the Craven Week.

Qualifying for the Golden Lions Country Districts team is also no mean feat, and the trio of stars from Allen Glen can most definitely be proud of themselves, especially after they played their parts in the team’s first victory of the week, a tense 25–23 victory over Western Province Country Districts.
