Plot 54 evictees to be defended in court

Mafinya said the Rural Development Department had appointed a lawyer and the matter will be heard in court.

Ward 114 councillor, Victor Mafinya, has indicated that court papers have been served to defend the evicted dwellers of Plot 54 in Honeydew.

The structures on the plot were reduced to rubble on 4 July when demolition tractors took down every standing building on the property. The families were left without shelter and had to seek alternative accommodation.

Mafinya criticised the plot owner for taking the decision without considering the consequences, stressing that the owner should have provided the people with alternative accommodation.

The latest news on the issue is that Mafinya said the Rural Development Department has appointed a lawyer, and the matter will be heard in court.

Mafinya’s biggest worry about such evictions was that the evictees might flee to Zandspruit and invade unused land, an issue very much in the forefront at Zandspruit at present.
