Negligent subcontractor to be held liable
Ward 126 councillor David Brand confirmed that City Power has sent a warning to the subcontractors about their negligence.
Operations by Rand Water could be discontinued if they continue causing power outages in the Weltevreden Park area.
Ward 126 councillor, David Brand, has confirmed that City Power has sent a warning to the subcontractor about the negligence.
“City Power has written to Rand Water to warn them that if the damage continues, City Power will stop them working – that’s how serious the issue is,” said Brand.
Areas surrounding Weltevreden Park and Allen’s Nek have experienced a number of power outages in recent weeks, most of them caused by the construction work currently taking place in the area.
Although Maziya General Services, the contractors on the F46 Rand Water project, have apologised for the inconvenience they have caused in the area, Brand said City Power will be taking action against them, even if the City actually needs the infrastructure they are putting in.

Brand also responded to the frequent complaints aired by residents who are dissatisfied with the delay in power restoration and to those who ask whether the contractors aren’t aware of where they are digging.
“Repairs cannot be done instantly,” he said. “A lot of people have asked whether the contractors know where the cables are before they start digging. The fact is, they are told where the cables should be, but sometimes they’re not there. Sometimes they are closer to the construction work than indicated, and that’s when the contractors end up snagging them,” Brand explained. He acknowledged however that Rand Water has been negligent and said he couldn’t believe how often they cause damage to the cables.
