Early morning on Sunday, 29 April, at about 2.30am, we and many other residents were awakened by the sounds of a driver revving his car’s engine.
The suburbs of Strubens Valley, Little Falls and Wilgeheuwel listened for at least five minutes to this fool revving the engine of his car, spinning its wheels and driving up and down Hendrik Potgieter Road.
It seems that this happens in other areas too, for instance Hendrik Potgieter Road from Albert Street towards the Hyperama, parts of Ontdekkers Road and also on Northumberland Avenue near the Ticketpro Dome.
This often happens on different nights.
Where is the JMPD? Undermanned, and if they do go out, they would arrive in a 1.4 VW Polo. All the racers disappear long before the JMPD arrives on the scene.
The JMPD finds it easier to set up a roadblock outside Clearwater Shopping Centre on a Saturday morning.
Why is it not possible for the law enforcement organisations such as the JMPD, Provincial Traffic and the police to do something about this?
Within these three organisations they have high-speed response vehicles. [Why don’t they] observe a few of these gatherings as spectators, recording registration numbers? Then encircle a large area with roadblocks. Anyone going into or coming out of the area can then be stopped and checked. Breathalyse them, record the type of vehicle and ID.
Inside the cordoned-off area, use the high-speed vehicles to go and put a stop to this, and make arrests.
People have lost their lives due to this type of activity, and unfortunately, there will be more deaths.
