Motorists and pedestrians cautioned after road emergencies report
A huge number of road accidents were attended to during the Easter long weekend.
The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Service (EMS) has urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution on the roads.
This follows the release of a report disclosing that a huge number of road accidents were attended to during the Easter long weekend.
“The EMS has noted with concern the number of motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents responded to during the recent Easter long weekend,” said Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the EMS.
Mulaudzi indicated that their call centre received a total of 328 calls about road emergencies, of which 183 were motor vehicle accidents and 145 were pedestrians, among them five fatalities.
“We therefore would like to urged our residents to exercise extreme caution when walking and also crossing the road. They are urged to wear highly visible clothing, especially at night and also to use designated pedestrian bridges when crossing the freeway, and to refrain from drinking and walking, especially at night.”
“Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when driving on our roads, obey the rules of the road, keep to the prescribed speed limit, and maintain a safe following distance to prevent motor vehicle accidents,” he went on.
Mulaudzi concluded by saying that the EMS will intensify their public education initiatives about road safety in schools, early childhood development centres, shopping centres and places of worship.
