Child Welfare hosts crazy feet breakfast for charity
Roodepoort Child Welfare held a crazy feet breakfast at Olive 'n Twist as the first of their annual winter drives for the less fortunate.
Roodepoort Child Welfare (RCW) recently welcomed about 40 people to Olive ‘n Twist for their crazy feet breakfast which also doubled as a drive for the less fortunate.
Those who attended were encouraged to bring along a pair of shoes or an item of clothing they no longer wear and would like to donate to the less fortunate.
The day started out with a story from RCW’s director, Estelle Odendaal, explaining how the crazy feet breakfast came to be.
“There was a 12-year-old girl who stayed with her mom and her mom’s boyfriend, as well as her siblings,” she began.
“After a while, RCW acted on several complaints by taking the children from the house. It then came to light that the boyfriend had molested the girl and she was pregnant. The girl then lost the baby due to severe malnutrition, because they never ate enough at home. The way this ties to crazy is we found it absolutely crazy that an adult could put a child through this. The feet part stems from the fact that the children’s feet were severely damaged due to the poor conditions that they had lived in. From this, we decided to create the crazy feet breakfast.”
Estelle was not the only one to share a story with those at the breakfast, with guest speaker Corey Spengler-Gathercole also sharing her own story of struggle and experiences with child welfare organisations.Once the sadder parts of the morning had been covered, everybody enjoyed breakfast before time came to parade their ‘crazy feet’.
Stunning feet were bountiful with a number of entries in strong contention for both the men’s and women’s titles.
