With the SGB elections this month, do you know what your responsibilities will be?

So, you want to make a difference at your child's school by joining the student governing body (SGB), but do you know what will be expected of you?

The three-year term for SGBs at schools came to an end on 28 February this year, which led to the announcement that the elections for the new SGBs will take place during the month of March.

The elections will take place at all schools in Gauteng, and any parent or legal guardian who has a learner enrolled at the school is welcome to become a part of the SGB.

The biggest factor when it comes to joining the SGB is that you have to be nominated. You may not simply nominate yourself, so you may have to call in a couple of favours to be nominated.

You can also nominate someone else, but that person must be aware of the nomination and there has to be a second parent’s signature on the nomination form as well.

In case you were wondering why it’s important to vote for the SGB, note that the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996 (SASA) gives governing bodies considerable powers to govern schools, which means that school governance is a key element in the quality of a school’s overall teaching, learning and management.

Now that you have the jist of the situation, see the graphic below for the responsibilities of the SGB at a school.
