Two accused in attempted robberies at Browns’ Jewellers remanded in custody

Two men linked to the attempted robberies at Brown’s Jewellers appeared briefly in court on Tuesday, 27 February.
The accused, Faith Ncube (25) and Wonder Masilela (35), appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court facing charges relating to a business robbery. Both accused were remanded in custody pending further investigation into the matter.
The Northsider had been informed by the Muldersdrift Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Masedi Masedim that three suspects were expected to appear on the day; but only two appeared in court.

The accused, plus two female suspects, were sought after by police after trying to rob the Brown’s Jewellers branches in Cradlestone and Clearwater Malls. The retailer previously confirmed that both incidents were committed by the same perpetrators.
The first robbery occurred on 16 July, when eight men allegedly attempted to ransack the Browns Jewellers shop at Clearwater Mall. However, a panic button was activated which set off the smoke detectors on the floor. The second incident happened on 30 July, when seven suspects allegedly fired several shots while they attempted to rob the Cradlestone Mall branch of Browns Jewellers.

A reward of up to R250 000 in cash was made available for the arrest and successful conviction of the five suspects whose identikits were publicised. This subsequently led to one arrest, which was confirmed by Brown’s Jewellers and the police.
According to the charge sheet, Ncube, whose place of birth is Zimbabwe, was arrested on 15 September 2017 while Masilela, whose place of birth is Swaziland, was arrested on 22 September 2017.
The court case was postponed to 23 March.
