Grade 1s portray mixed feelings on first day of school

The reopening of Panorama Primary School on 17 January was filled with mixed emotions as new Grade 1 kiddies started their long schooling journey.

Parents Oriana Borne, the mother of Brandon, and Roma Naicker, the mother of Sarah, had to spend most of their morning in their children’s classrooms as they comforted their nervous children who were not buying into the idea of being away from home.
“Everything is still new to him. He is no longer with is old friends and crèche teachers who used to cuddle him. I think he will be fine by tomorrow,” said Oriana, describing her son’s first day behaviour.
Roma, who arguably had the toughest challenge with her daughter at school, said her daughter was only nervous because she looked forward to this day.
Proud father Thabiso Molefe, who hugged his daughter Thlompo goodbye after dropping her off in class, said all his little one talked about during the holidays was going to school. “She is very happy to be in Grade 1. We did the shopping together and she always likes to say she is a big girl now, and she proved so,” said Thabiso.
