Do you feel it yet?

” ‘Tis the season to be jolly, tra la la la, la la, la la.” Did you sing along?

Christmas shopping is in full swing, preparations for the big meals are underway and Christmas trees and decorations are up. People are definitely getting into the spirit of the festive season. And it is no wonder, because, wherever you go, the festivities are advertised. Even Facebook is full of ideas on how to cook the perfect meal, creative ways to wrap presents and, of course, gift ideas.

Although I love the spirit of Christmas, I think people tend to go overboard and shops tend to over-commercialise and abuse the jolliness of the consumers.

I don’t even have a Christmas tree – I don’t own one.

When my daughters were younger, I wanted to teach them that Christmas is not about us or getting hugely expensive gifts, but rather the celebration of the birthday of Jesus Christ. They understood it perfectly. Therefore I made a bigger issue of their birthdays because it is their special day. But that is just my reasoning.

While we are on the subject of buying gifts, though, I had a light bulb moment that I would like to share. Instead of buying hugely expensive gifts that will probably be forgotten come the New Year, why not spend some of that money to buy dog or cat food and donate it to an animal shelter like the Roodepoort SPCA, Community Led Animal Welfare, Cause for Paws – there are too many to mention, but I am sure you get the idea.

It just breaks my heart to see so many animals looking extremely sad because they don’t have a loving forever home. Don’t get me wrong, I am not advocating giving pets as Christmas gifts. That’s wrong. Just, you know, spare a thought for the animals.

I would like to know what your plans for Christmas are, so send an email to roelienv@caxton.co.za. Next week is the last edition of the Northsider for the year and I would like to share your plans with others – they might spark a few ideas too.

Until next week, take care of one another.

Ciao
