David’s story portrayed with a twist
The story of Old Testament hero, David, was retold in a modern-day setting during a production at King's School West Rand.
The King’s School West Rand recently showcased a one-of-a-kind whole-school production dubbed ‘From a kid to a King’, with hundreds of enthusiastic dramatic arts learners from Grades 1 to 11 collaborating in the production which aimed to re-tell the tale of the Old Testament hero, David.
The school production differed somewhat from the biblical story of David of Bethlehem, a young shepherd who first gained fame as a musician and later killed Goliath, by having its own special twist.
The script
The production had a modern twist, with David being portrayed as the youngest son of a wealthy businessman living in the city. This man, father of six boys, is about to retire and needs to choose a successor from his sons. He is a God-fearing man and desires his successor to be the same. However, none of his sons, except David, lived a godly life. Through music and dance, the ungodly sons’ characters are portrayed as greed, rage, pride, sexual immorality and drunkenness. David’s character is portrayed through various worship songs and dance. At the end, young David is chosen as his father’s successor.
