Your report in the issue of 17 November, Dumping rubble for a good cause, refers.
The reported draining of the wetland (not swamp) on the Strubenspruit is illegal. Wetlands slow the release of storm water and prevent floods. The municipality now forces developers of complexes to install attenuation ponds for this purpose.
There is presently a small apparently man-made channel at the spruit and the effects of this can be seen since Witwatersrand Road flooded during the recent storms. In addition the rubble being used is unsuitable, being bricks, tiles, plastic piping and other plastics.
The rubble was placed above the bank where it serves no purpose at present. I don’t think the municipality would approve the plans without consultation and the rubble used should be of acceptable quality. I would suggest Mr Schreuder obtains permission for the project and controls the dumping because it appears at this stage to purely offer a removal company a simple and low cost means of disposing of unsightly rubble.
