Dumping for a good cause

The dumping of rubble in the green belt on Witwatersrand Road in Strubens Valley, which has outraged a number of residents, was authorised by the Little Falls and Strubens Valley Residential Community.
This follows a confrontation with the rubble removers, who were prevented from performing their duties after a local resident assumed that they were dumping illegally.

Anthony Nekokwne, who runs the business, said they were given permission to dump in the green belt under very strict conditions.
“There was a meeting among residents in the area and we were granted permission by Hennie Schreuder to dump in the green belt in order to fill up the swamps,” said Nekokne, adding that they are forbidden to dump paper and plastic.
Lifco executive member Schreuder confirmed the arrangement with the rubble removers, saying that it was part of a programme to beautify the area. “We are busy beautifying the area and opening the water channel. The building rubble is being used to block the side channels so we can control the formation of the swamp,” he explained.
