Lab tests confirm – no water contamination
Johannesburg Water confirms that water is safe for human consumption
Residents in Northriding and surrounding areas received good news when Johannesburg Water (JW) confirmed that their water is safe for human consumption.
This comes after JW warned residents on 1 November not to use tap water for drinking or cooking purposes, because of suspected sewer contamination in the water network.

Water samples were taken from seven hydrants in the area as well as from the Honeydew and Cosmo City reservoirs, and sent to laboratories for testing. As a precautionary measure, the system was flushed with chlorine and residents had access to water tankers.
“We can confirm that, after receiving the results from the laboratory tests, there is no contamination of the water in Northriding, especially around Boundary Road, and Aureole and Spionkop Avenues,” said Eleanor Mavimbela, the JW spokesperson.
The extensive tests that were conducted confirmed that the water was free of any bacteria or sewage contamination, and residents could resume using tap water for drinking and cooking.
“Laboratory results that were received from seven hydrants in the reticulation area indicated that no E-coli or Total coliform bacteria was found. The samples that were taken were clear and comply with South Africa’s National Standard 241,” Mavimbela said.
She concluded by saying, “JW is committed to providing water and sanitation that is of high quality to all residents of the City of Johannesburg and apologises for the inconvenience caused.”
