Beg or perform for food and money?

A homeless street beggar in Ruimsig has opted to be creative with his begging techniques, unlike the hordes that just display pieces of cardboard and ask for handouts.

Street performers in many parts of Roodepoort have mastered the technique of making what they do pay for them by winning many motorists’ hearts with their crazy antics at busy intersections.

Most of the entertainers are not proud of what they do, but take to the streets to entertain motorists in order to put food on their families’ tables, instead of begging in the traditional way. Among them are dancers, clowns, magicians and singers.

A homeless beggar in Ruimsig opted to be creative in his effort to raise money to feed himself, unlike the hordes that just display pieces of cardboard and ask for handouts. Abraham Fhatu, who was profiled by Times Live, entertains motorists daily on the corner of Hendrik Potgieter and Peter Roads. He paints his face white, dresses up in funny clothes, and acts like a clown. He apparently lives in a trench alongside a busy road.

Fhatu’s sole source of survival is the generous motorists who give him cash or food after his performance. In the profile, he said he left his hometown in Limpopo in hopes of getting a job in Johannesburg. He added that he had no support at home, lived alone, and could not get a decent job in his hometown.
