Learners enrich their business minds

Charterhouse School's Grade 7s dive into the world of entrepreneurship.

Money, money, money; how to make it and how to spend it, was the name of the game at Charterhouse School’s EMS Day.

The school’s Grade 7s hosted an EMS day as part of the EMS (Economic Management Science) curriculum. The market day was a great success, as all students participated and gained various business skills.

Each business was unique, for example, there was a stall dedicated to dunk tanking and Lynn Davis, head of department for the Grade 7s decided to brave the cold and get dunked by one of the Charterhouse learners. Another creative idea that really suited the target market was the jumping castle. This business was booming throughout the day, with teachers even deciding to test it out. The biggest challenge faced by learners was dealing with large groups of children buying from their stalls.

A panel of teachers judged stalls and portfolios were assessed in the hope of receiving the Entrepreneur award at year-end.

Last year a total profit of R13 000 was raised. The profit from the day is split into three parts: 25 per cent to a charity of choice, 25 per cent towards the Grade 7 fund and 50 per cent split between the members of the group.

The biggest amount ever split between the members of the group to date is over R4 000. The Grade 7 class of 2017 definitely exceeded last year’s profit record and will contribute a generous amount of money to the charity of their choice.
