Is CoJ simply the best?

The City of Johannesburg received the prestigious award of being the greenest municipality.

It is the second year they brought the trophy home.

This competition focuses on sustainable development in areas such as waste-management practices, efficient energy use, sustainable water use, public participation and best practice in municipal leadership.

Do you agree with the adjudicators?

I find the Roodepoort and Northside area extremely dirty. There is litter everywhere and leaking or burst pipes take forever to be fixed. The roads are a nightmare. They are littered with potholes and I seldom see them being fixed. But then again, maybe I just drive on the roads that are low on the repairs list.

The award carries a R3,5 million prize money. I sincerely hope the City will put it to good use and fix some of the major problems. According to a City press release, the prize money will be ploughed back into the infrastructure projects aimed at preserving and protecting the environment.

I hope this includes getting rid of vagrants who have set up home, almost overnight, in the Constantia Kloof and Weltevreden Park koppies.

And while the City claims it is committed to sustainably preserving and protecting its ecological assets, and improving the quality of life of its citizens, it should also focus on fixing potholes, burst water pipes and the never-ending billing complaints.

Despite all of this, I love my city. Most of its citizens are wholesome, friendly and don’t shy away from helping those in need.

However, if only the City could do something about the very irritating and lawless vehicle drivers …
