RA takes a stand against Kastaiing Street speedsters
Welview RA aims to get 400 signatures for their petition.
A petition is being circulated in the area to get residents involved in finding a solution to the long-standing issue of speeding on Kastaiing Street.
Tana Cope, the chairperson of the association, raised concerns about this persisting issue, which poses a risk to children and pets using the road.“We’ve had a lot of accidents on this road, and animals being killed by vehicles. Recently a bakkie crashed through a wall, and this definitely is a concern to the residents,” said Cope.

She added that the petition has received an overwhelming amount of support but they need more signatures. “We’ve have 108 signatures on the petition. However, the target is 400. We got 100 signatures in one day, which means the community supports it,” Cope explained.Cope complained that motorists have no regard for the speed-calming measure on the street. “Kastaiing Street is very long and it has only one stop street, which motorists don’t obey.”

Residents were also unhappy that motorists do not take into account that there are schools on the street.“Drivers have no concern that there is daycare on the road. The speed limit is clearly marked 40km/h but they fly through at over 60km/h,” a concerned Chantell Blake said.

Another resident, Yolanda Nortje said, “There [are] a few nursery schools in that street [but] cars and taxis think it is a racing track due to the fact that it [the road] is a very long and winding street. They ignore the only stop street.” Cope added that she has approached Ward 126 councillor David Brand for intervention. She further revealed that speed humps might be a solution and is aware that their appeal to council might take some time to be approved.
“I know with Council things take time. A survey needs to be done but as long as we can get a solution,” she concluded.
