JG Strydom Road to reopen soon

A section of JG Strydom Road has been resurfaced.

Much to the relief of motorists using JG Strydom Road, the section of road between Cornelius Street and Batoka Avenue has been re-tarred and will soon be reopened.

The section has been under construction for many months due to the F46 Rand Water Project. The road was dug up in sections to lay large diameter water pipes. The road was restored on 28 August and will be reopened on 4 September.

Construction company, Kwamhlanga Roads, which is responsible for the reconstruction of the road, explained that once a primer and base layer have been laid, the asphalt is laid and compacted with large heating plates. A roller further compacts the asphalt and mimics the pressure of traffic on the road. The road’s surface is then left with a sticky glaze. Once the sticky surface has dried, the road undergoes tests such as a core drill or compression test to determine whether the road is suitable for motorists’ use.

The asphalt is a SABS medium mix with smaller stones, which will hopefully prevent future potholes. This section is the first part of JG Strydom Road to be re-tarred. As the Rand Water project moves along the road, more sections will be restored and reopened.
