Camera rollout dependent on residents’ commitment

Poor attendance at last week’s CCTV camera roll-out meeting did not stop the Little Falls and Strubens Valley Residential Community (Lifco) from encouraging the residents to stand together in the fight against crime.
The area consists of about 5 000 residents but not even a hundred were able to attend the gathering.
As a tool to decrease crime in the suburb, Lifco decided to involve the community in the proposal they had received from Vumatel, a fibre network company, to assist with the installation of more cameras as the community tries to resolve its security problems.
The meeting was coordinated by Hennie Schreuder, Allan Webb and Ward 85 councillor, Carl Mann, who advised the attendees about the benefits of the project.

“In brief, what will happen is that if a resident commits to using IConnect (one of the ISPs that will utilise the Vumatel fibre backbone) as their service provider for fibre, IConnect will provide residents with a fibre package that is compatible with those offered by other service providers, and donate a portion of whatever money is spent back to the community to be used for CCTV cameras,” Schreuder explained.
He added that a security division of the fibre company will install, monitor and maintain the cameras. “As Vuma Safe, the security division of Vumatel will be installing the CCTV cameras they will match whatever IConnect donates and use it towards the cameras.”
“The cameras will be connected to the police database which alerts you to the presence of stolen and suspicious vehicles,” he further explained, adding that communication will also be directed to all the security companies in the area.
The project seeks to roll-out a total of at least 42 cameras which will be installed at strategic points such as the green belt, schools, shopping centre and other hot spots.
Apart from assisting in crime-solving and reduction, Schreuder also mentioned that the cameras will go a long way towards resolving incidents of speeding, reckless driving and vagrancy in the area.
