National Ice Cream Sandwich Day

Enjoy this frozen treat on #NationalIceCreamSandwichDay

2 August is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day and celebrates a delicious frozen treat that is guaranteed to refresh you on a hot summer day.

In 1900, the original ice cream sandwich sold for a penny from a push cart in the Bowery neighbourhood of New York. The vendor, who was never identified in the nationwide printed articles, sandwiched the ice cream between two milk biscuits. Soon after that, push carts popped up around the city and country during the summer months, selling the portable treats.

There are pictures from the early 1900s, titled On the Beach, Atlantic City, that show the popularity of ice cream sandwiches that were sold for one cent.

Jerry Newberg invented the modern version of the ice cream sandwich in 1945 while selling ice cream at Forbes Field. There are a variety of alternatives to the classic ice cream sandwich using chocolate cookies. These include using oatmeal cookies or crisp rice wafers.

Ice cream sandwiches are known by many different names throughout the world, including the Monaco Bar, Giant Sandwich, Maxibon, Cream Between, Vanilla Slice, Ice Cream Wafer, and many more.

Celebrate by enjoying a delicious, refreshing ice cream sandwich.
