Agape Christian School in Weltevreden Park has been giving back to charities each term using a system of piggy banks.
Organiser of the charity work and teacher, Pam Oppermann said each classroom has a piggy bank where the children donate money. Children donate their tuck shop change or pocket money which is then counted and donated at the end of each term. The chosen charity visits the school to pick up the donations and speaks to the children about what they do.
In the first term of this year, the school donated R2 500 to Children of Fire. This term, on 21 June, they donated R1 700 in groceries to the Jan Hofmeyer Community Centre which feeds 350 people a day, five days a week.

Recently the school held a pyjama day where the children were allowed to come to school in their pyjamas. The money from the day was used to purchase dog and cat food which will be donated to the Roodepoort SPCA.
The school is also working on crocheting blankets and hopes to donate 25 blankets this year.
Oppermann is also collecting bread tags and bottle caps which will eventually be handed in to receive a wheelchair for a person in need.
“Children who donate R10 or more get a certificate. The class that brings in the most money also receives a class certificate. This is our way to encourage the children,” Oppermann explained.
She said it was important that the children see the members of the different charities they donate money to so they know it is going to a good place and it encourages them to keep on giving.Edited by Stacey Woensdregt
