UPDATE: Spring Road Bridge investigations still ongoing

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Investigations underway to solve issues of Spring Road Bridge.

Further investigation is needed to tackle the structural issues of Spring Road Bridge.

Spring Road Bridge was closed to motorists and pedestrians at the end of March, as its structural integrity could not be guaranteed.

Ward 126 councillor David Brand confirmed that investigations are ongoing.

The issues with the bridge include:

  • The eastern and western waterways under the bridge have eroded
  • The middle supporting bridge pillar and its foundation have been eroded
  • Services mounted on the bridge have been exposed and stormwater has caused extensive damage to the related infrastructure.

Due to the heavy rains, the gabion baskets which prevent river bank erosion have been washed away, and sewerage lines and a nearby house are in danger of being damaged by heavy water flow.

It was first estimated at the end of March that the bridge would remain closed for the next 10 months, however, Brand could not guarantee how long it would take for the issues to be solved.

The bridge is closed off at Moss Road and just after Netball Street. Motorists and pedestrians are reminded not to use the bridge.
