Dave Eagar from the Volvo dealership points at the sewage that flows next to their premises.
Employees from a leading car dealership company on Hendrik Potgieter Road are fearing health risks following a sewage spill that has been gushing into their premises since last week.
Dave Eagar from Volvo uses a few sand bags to prevent sewage from flowing onto their property.
Dave Eagar from the Volvo dealership told Roodepoort Northsider that the problem started last Saturday (29 April), and they had a hard time reporting the issue to the City.
“The sewage has been running since last Saturday. We contacted the municipality to report the problem and they said their system was offline, let’s try again on Monday,” Eagar complained.
He added that on Monday, they reported the issue again and were issued a reference number, but the problem has remained.
“We got through to them on Monday and they gave us a reference number. But we’ve been calling them since Tuesday, but no answer.”

When Eagar traced the problem, he discovered that the sewage came from slightly across their property and up through underground drains.
“It appears to be coming from across Hendrik Potgieter through a wall, and flows underneath the road and then runs to the bottom of our premises,” Eagar explained.
Roodepoort Northsider visited the scene. Upon arrival, the sewage was running like a river next to the Volvo premises, leaving an unbearable smell, which has forced the dealership to keep their glass doors shut. The company also had to paste a written apology to their clients explaining the mess.

Eagar criticised the municipality for the lack of services when their system was offline. “Why can’t we log our complaints manually if the system is not working at the time.”
He also mentioned that they even used sand bags to divert the sewage.
Johannesburg Water has been approached for comment. Spokesperson for the entity, Eleanor Mavimbela, has promised to revert with answers to the problem.
