Motorists’ behaviour to blame for crashes at Pegasus complex
WILGEHEUWEL – Pegasus residents appeal for speed bumps on Sjampanje Street to prevent accidents.
Residents of Pegasus, a complex in Wilgeheuwel have run out of ideas to try to prevent vehicles from crashing into their security wall.
They believe the accidents occur due to motorists’ speeding on Sjampanje Street.

Chairperson of Pegasus Body Corporate, Sheryl Gibbons, described the motorists’ speeding as a ‘tragic scene waiting to happen’.
“We’ve had three accidents in four months and six accidents where motorists have gone through the wall. One day someone will get killed because cars drive very fast on this road,” Gibbons, who also owns a property in the complex warned.
According to Gibbons, motorists travel at an average speed of 80km/h to 120km/h, and they fail to negotiate the bend near Cabernet Street, causing vehicles to crash through their wall. She also blamed poor street lighting for the accidents.
“Streetlights are very bad on this road. The lights don’t even work sometimes. So motorists drive straight through our wall causing double the problem,” Gibbons complained.
She said the collapsed wall also created a security problem.
“Every time there’s a hole in the wall it opens up an attempt to crime. I don’t know what the solution is to this problem because Johannesburg Roads Agency [JRA] said they can’t put speed humps on a slope.”

Ward 97 councillor Leah Knott gave her opinion on the matter, “I’ve advised them [residents] that I cannot put speed humps in,” she said. “They need to follow the JRA process which includes a petition and application for a traffic impact assessment etc.”
She added that the information was available on the JRA website
“Streetlights [should] be logged with City Power. They’re welcome to escalate the reference number to me once logged,” added Knott.
